The regional needs of members are served through a network of 10 chapters. Through monthly meetings and promotional activities, the chapters represent an ideal way for member companies to keep abreast of concerns regarding the profession. The two most sought after membership benefits — education and networking opportunities — are provided through the association’s regional chapter structure.

Durham Chapter

To the wonderful Landscape Ontario community,

It is with great pleasure that I submit this report to you, because for the first time in many years, I feel like we have a truly reinvigorated Chapter Executive, and the companies in Durham are actually coming out to events!

A special shout-out to Cassandra Cotter and Catrina Chiodo for really keeping the peddle to the floor on events and keeping us all in line.

As very special thank you to Carol Fulford, who finally feels like she can let go of some of the work she has done for 30 years with the Durham Chapter because it finally has people to carry it forward.

I honestly can’t wait for someone to take over as president as well, because that is apart of the wonderful world of LO, that we grow while here, and then step aside for the future generations to grow as well.

We started this term off with a great event at Windreach Farms – after helping them send some dangerous farm implements to auction, we came in and hedge trimmed, weeded, and mulched their main garden areas, when done, we had a lovely tour of the property and had the history of the property explained to us.

We are so lucky to have a place like this in Durham, and it is our hope that over time, we will do more and more events here. They have an amazing outside classroom space that any arborist would appreciate (think tree stumps for stools).

This was followed with more consistent executive meetings, a well attended MTO and LO update meeting at the end of April.

Two outreach events at Arnt’s Topsoil over the summer, and then our first every Golf Tournament, and with almost 100 golfers, and a decent donation to the Ontario Horticultural Trades Foundation.

We look forward to doing this yearly going forward, and to hopefully have more and more people out.

We are planning our next meeting for November at a local Brewery, that will have a guest speaker, and tours of the brewery.

We think having an event in a cool space will make a big difference in attendance.

Also a special thank you to Rob Havery for stepping up to be our Provincial Board Representative!

It is always a pleasure working with my wonderful executive, and I look forward to the future of Durham Chapter!

Respectfully submitted,
Jon Agg

Golf tournament at Echo Valley Golf Course (season kick-off)
Our season commenced with a successful Golf Tournament at Echo Valley Golf Course. Heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for their unwavering support, contributing to an enjoyable day of great weather and camaraderie.

October dinner meeting hosted by In-Lite
In-Lite graciously hosted our October dinner meeting, featuring an insightful Apprenticeship talk, a captivating In-Lite product presentation, and an open round table discussion on pressing industry topics.

November Shop Talk gathering
A small yet impactful Shop Talk gathering took place at a local brewery in November. Connections were forged, and important business discussions ensued.

December holiday social at The Factory
The second edition of our Holiday Social at London's The Factory was a resounding success. The well-attended event featured games and joyful reunions, creating memorable moments for everyone.

7th annual Plant Symposium (co-hosted by London and Ottawa)
Our chapter, in collaboration with Ottawa, successfully hosted the 7th annual Plant Symposium. The live event in London, coupled with seamless streaming, offered valuable insights to participants, all made possible by the exceptional support of LO staff.

Community outreach with Indwell
Over the past few years, we have partnered with Indwell, a not-for-profit organization providing affordable housing. Our chapter's commitment to installing gardens at the Embassy Commons facility in London resulted in a remarkable fundraising effort of $140,785. A photo op event celebrated this achievement, symbolizing our members' generosity and hard work.

Support for Women In Landscaping's "Touch a Truck" event
We proudly supported Women In Landscaping's third annual "Touch a Truck" event, fostering interest in the green industries among families and children.

Baseball Tournament in August
The August Baseball Tournament featured fierce competition among four teams, with Mountview Landscaping retaining their #1 ranking for the second consecutive year. Thanks to Permacon and our sponsors for their invaluable support.

London Chapter AGM
The AGM welcomed two new directors to our board — Dan Vernooy from Accent Interlocking Pavers & Landscaping Inc. and Mat Teske from Van Horik’s Landscaping. We extend a warm welcome to Dan and Mat.

Acknowledegments and thanks
Special thanks to Pete Vanderley who retired from the board after many years of outstanding service. We will miss you on the board Pete!

I would like to express my gratitude to my fellow board members: LO head office, the Provincial Board of Directors and associated committees for their unwavering dedication to our profession. As we look forward to the 2023/24 season, let's carry this momentum forward and make it truly fantastic.

Ottawa Chapter

The 2022-2023 year in the Ottawa Chapter saw the return of many events, the planning for the full return of others and a very exciting new one.

In September 2022, the Ottawa Chapter Golf Tournament resumed with a Nine & Dine at the Canadian Golf Club. The event was sold out and raised a staggering $5,000 for the Caring & Sharing Exchange.

Late October 2022, the 17th annual Day of Tribute was held at Beechwood Cemetery in honour of the Canadian Military and their families. It was a morning of maintenance on the grounds by volunteer members from the chapter to tidy, plant and prepare for Remembrance Day ceremonies at the cemetery. Many thanks for Pete Campbell and all the volunteers who upheld this long-running Ottawa Chapter event.

Also in November, the chapter held a meeting with guests from Rain Ready Ottawa, Envirocentre and Fusion Landscape Training to learn about the City of Ottawa’s Rain Ready incentive and rebate program, the assessment process and how to become Fusion Landscape Certified to better serve clients looking for lot level stormwater management solutions.

The Ottawa Chapter meeting in December was held at Centurion Conference centre for the second year in a row. The ugly holiday wweater competition returned and the final push for donations and volunteer drivers was organized for the Caring & Sharing Exchange.

In late December 2022, thanks to the hard work of Marc Carriere and the generous donations of members, a total of $13,500 was raised, helping 120 families in the Ottawa area have access to the long-running program providing those in need with food hampers during the holiday season. Now in its 5th season as an Ottawa event, we hope to help up to 200 families in December 2023.

In February 2023, the Ottawa Chapter joined once again with the London Chapter to organize the Plant Symposium with a hybrid event in London. With numerous speakers and expert panels, the long-running event was hugely successful and reached a wider audience than ever before. We are excited for the 2024 hybrid event to be held virtually and in conjunction with Green Trade Expo in Ottawa.

At the Ottawa Chapter meeting in February 2023, we welcomed City of Ottawa Bylaw Services to address some common questions and misconceptions. It was an informative session with takeaway advice for all sectors of the trade.

In March 2023, Living Landscapes returned to the Ottawa Home and Garden Show. Many members came together to build one large, communal garden. With thousands of plants, bulbs, water features, walkways and arches, the event breathes spring life into the Ottawa community.

We were pleased to see over 80 members register for the 2023 AGM at the EY Centre before Living Landscapes’ opening, where members were able to get a sneak peak at the gardens before the general public.

Touch-a-Truck, The event was a big hit. Probably had about 400-500 people (all people) go through. Similar to the event in London. It was on July 22 2023. He is a break down of the activity…”an exciting event where children, families, and community members can get up close and personal with different types of industry vehicles and equipment. This interactive and educational experience is their chance to explore and learn about the different types of vehicles used in the landscaping industry — and is a great opportunity for you to showcase our profession and promote its many benefits.”

In 2023-2024 the Ottawa Chapter hopes to see the full resumption of regular events, including the annual golf tournament, chapter meetings, Day of Tribute, Caring and Sharing, GreenTrade Expo, Awards of Distinction, Living Landscapes, Touch-a-Truck and other events that continue to strengthen the Ottawa Chapter of Landscape Ontario.

I am delighted to present the Chapter Report for the year 2023, highlighting the significant achievements and collaborative efforts of our dedicated board.

Board expansion
This year has been marked by growth and strengthened leadership as we welcomed five accomplished individuals to our board. With their unique skills and perspectives, we now boast a diverse team of 10 board members, enhancing the depth and breadth of our strategic vision.

Successful AGM and MTO meeting
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Members-Only (MTO) meeting in March were resounding successes. I want to extend our gratitude to Strathroy Turf for their generous sponsorship, which played a pivotal role in the seamless execution of these events. The engaged participation of our members and sponsors underscored the strength of our community.

Job Fair in partnership with UHC
Our collaboration with the local University Health Center (UHC) resulted in a highly successful job fair. With the participation of five employers and over 200 potential candidates, we actively contributed to fostering connections between the business community and our future professionals.

Level Up with Landscape Ontario
In October, we actively participated in the Level Up event alongside Landscape Ontario's head office. Our booth engaged with thousands of youth, providing insights into green careers and showcasing our GROW program and Apprenticeship Program. This initiative aligns with our commitment to cultivating the next generation of leaders in our industry.

Partnership with Windsor Residence for Young Men:
In September, we forged a meaningful partnership with the Windsor Residence for Young Men, supporting their annual golf tournament. As a board, we sponsored a hole and a team. Leveraging our network to encourage participation, we were instrumental in helping raise over $8,000, contributing to a total exceeding $20,000 for their tournament.

Looking ahead
As we celebrate the achievements of the past year, I am inspired by the dedication and collaboration that define our organization. Our expanded board, successful events, and impactful partnerships position us for continued growth and influence.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each board member for their unwavering commitment and enthusiasm. Together, we have made a lasting impact on our community, and I am eager to see the continued success that awaits us in the coming year.

Thank you for your steadfast leadership and support.
